چکیده

In this work, we suggest and demonstrate a robust method to tune the plasma frequencies of wire mediums. The method we suggest involves the use of two or more wire arrangements in the unit cell. By incorporating the method we suggested it is possible to tune the plasma frequencies of wire mediums effectively by use of lower metal densities. In addition, we study the effective permittivities and permeabilities of labyrinth based metamaterials. Our results show that the effective permeability of the labyrinth based metamaterial medium is negative above a certain frequency. The results of the effective permittivity calculations for the labyrinth based metamaterial medium reveal that the labyrinth structure exhibits a strong dielectric response near the magnetic resonance frequency. Finally, we design labyrinth based lefthanded mediums that have several desired properties such as simultaneous , 1 and , 0. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. General relativity in electrical engineering

In electrical engineering metamaterials have been developed that offer unprecedented control over electromagnetic fields. Here, we show that general relativity provides the theoretical tools for designing devices made of such versatile materials. Given a desired device function, the theory describes the electromagnetic properties that turn this function into fact. We consider media that facilit...

An Electrically Engineered Meta - Material

Recent developments in artificially engineered metamaterials have enabled the creation of electromagnetic materials with properties not found in nature. Much work has centered on designing split ring resonators (SRR's) and electrical coupled LC resonators (ELC's) to create bulk mediums with desired effective permittivity and permeability. Recent work has demonstrated the feasibility of developi...

Inverse Synthesis of Electromagnetic Mate- Rials Using Homogenization Based Topology Optimization

Recent studies on artificial materials demonstrate that substantial improvements in electromagnetic response can be attained by combining different materials subject to desired metrics. However, the perfect material combination is unique and extremely difficult to determine without automated synthesis schemes. In this paper, we develop a versatile approach to design the microstructure of period...

Electromagnetic wave scattering by many small bodies and creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient

Electromagnetic wave scattering by many small particles is studied. An integral equation is derived for the self-consistent field E in a medium, obtained by embedding many small particles into a given region D. The derivation of this integral equation uses a lemma about convergence of certain sums. These sums are similar to Riemannian sums for the integral equation for E. Convergence of these s...

Designing disordered hyperuniform two-phase materials with novel physical properties

Heterogeneous materials consisting of different phases are ideally suited to achieve a broad spectrum of desirable bulk physical properties by combining the best features of the constituents through the strategic spatial arrangement of the different phases. Disordered hyperuniform heterogeneous materials are new, exotic amorphous matter that behave like crystals in the manner in which they supp...
